Provenance |
Frederick Smith, born in England c. 1732, emigrated to the colonies. He served on the Council of New Jersey and was Chief Justice of New Jersey from 1764-1766. This hatchment was believed to be carried before the funeral cortege of Smyth or his wife Margaret Oswald whom he married on March 21, 1784. Margareta was buried in May 1806 in the Christ Church Yard, the date reflected on the hatchment. Her husband Frederick Smith {Smyth} was buried in Christ Church's Yard on February 11, 1815. Hatchments were most common in the 18th and early 19th century and used After death they were frequently left on the front of the house for the first year and then placed in the individual's church. |
