Louis Cope Washburn, born in Coatesville, Pennsylvania was one of a family of 15 children whose father was an itinerant minister. He received a Bachelor's degree from St. Stephen's college in NY, his Master's from Trinity College, CT and Berkeley Divinity School. He worked in both PA and NY and in 1895 was appointed archdeacon of Rochester. While serving as a rector one summer in Maine, he met parishioners of Christ Church. He was appointed rector of Christ Church in 1907 and served until he retired in 1937. During WW II he served as a chaplain at Camp Meade. While chairman of the Diocesan Committee on war work he put together, "A Prayerbook for Soldiers and Sailors." He preached his last sermon at Christ Church with a bandage around his head, the result of a mugging. He died in 1938. |
