The Building and Property Files relate to the Burial Ground; the five physical buildings associated with Christ Church, Christ Church, Neighborhood House, Washburn House, the Rectory at 336 Spruce Street and the Bishop White House at 309 Walnut Street; and the Curtis Organ. Researchers interested in Christ Church owned buildings or the Burial Ground should also review the Architectural Drawings collections. There are some fabulous measured drawings dating back to the early nineteenth century. Burial Ground records, which date from 1906 to 1989, pertain to restoration work, historic research, famous burials, and landscaping. Of note is a 1930s file about exhuming the body of Francis Hopkinson and a 1989 file about vandalism in the burial ground. Files about the church building, which date from 1897-1987, contain correspondence and other records pertaining to general maintenance and historic preservation. Historic preservation efforts completed in the early 1950s and the mid 1970s make up the bulk of the files. 1950s files include eight files created by the architect in charge of the project, Earle Pederson. Of note, are the contents of a small time capsule that was enclosed in the church wall during work in the late nineteenth century. It contained annotated business cards, coins and other notes about the individuals who completed the project. The time capsule was found during the 1950s restoration projects. The 1970s files contain correspondence, building contracts, and measured drawings detailing the work that was completed. There are only a handful of correspondence files about Neighborhood House and Washburn House, dating from 1915 to 1954. Of note is a file from the 1920s about the installation of a bowling alley in Neighborhood House, a copy of the 1915 Neighborhood House Social Survey, and building contracts. Next, are records detailing the history and 1960 restoration of the church rectory, located at 336 Spruce Street, and a 1961 furnishing plan for the Bishop White House, located at 309 Walnut Street. Rounding out the series are a handful of correspondence files, dating from 1921 to circa 1980, about the acquisition, installation and maintenance of the Curtis Organ. |
